{"id":176,"date":"2009-12-23T20:48:44","date_gmt":"2009-12-24T00:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flatlandrescue.com\/?p=176"},"modified":"2009-12-23T20:48:44","modified_gmt":"2009-12-24T00:48:44","slug":"help-email-is-working-against-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flatlandrescue.com\/?p=176","title":{"rendered":"Help, I&#8217;m Drowning in Revision Ambiguity!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our team had a tight deadline and tons of work to get done.\u00a0 There were dozens of research topics, hours of analysis, and a final presentation due in just a couple of weeks.\u00a0 Each person was responsible for multiple sections along with the supporting documentation.\u00a0 Just a few days into the project, it was obvious our technology was working against us.\u00a0 With several &#8220;current&#8221; versions of working documents circulating through eight email In-Boxes, the team was paralyzed by revision ambiguity.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a new problem.\u00a0 Every organization that gets things done has some formal way to organize information, collaborate on projects, and move project deliverables toward completion.\u00a0 Or maybe not.\u00a0 Maybe your organization or class is just as disorganized and frustrated as we were.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We found a solution in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huddle.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Huddle.net<\/a>, a web-based collaboration service from Great Britain.\u00a0 Huddle offers an online space that is powerful and flexible.\u00a0 I originally signed up for a free space, but quickly saw the value for collaborating with other partners on different projects.\u00a0 The free service only allows a single workspace, but all the tools are fully functional.\u00a0 The basic service costs $15\/month and is well worth the money.\u00a0 I can manage up to five separate workspaces and invite as many collaborators as needed.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a 2.5GB storage limit, but I have two concurrent projects running with hundreds of documents and have never come close to needing more space.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_180\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180\" class=\"size-full wp-image-180\" title=\"Huddle Document Manager\" src=\"http:\/\/eflatland.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Huddle_1.gif\" alt=\"Huddle Document Manager\" width=\"420\" height=\"203\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Huddle Document Manager<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong>Features that were helpful for my team:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Online file editing for Microsoft Office files (Office 2003 or earlier)<\/li>\n<li>Automatic versioning for files uploaded to a workspace<\/li>\n<li>Online viewer for any graphic file uploaded to a workspace<\/li>\n<li>RSS or Email notification when files were changed<\/li>\n<li>Workspace calendar and ToDo list<\/li>\n<li>Online whiteboard for brainstorming and project links<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once the team started using Huddle, it was much easier to keep track of work needed and milestones accomplished.\u00a0\u00a0 Project meetings revolved around the files on Huddle, so there was never any fumbling around looking for the most recent versions in email boxes and flash drives.\u00a0 By the time the final presentation was made, even the skeptics were converted.<\/p>\n<p>If you need an agile collaboration tool, consider Huddle.net.\u00a0 If you have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn<\/a> account, you can add a free Huddle workspace from the LinkedIn Applications menu. \u00a0It was a great solution for my group, and got us moving again!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With several &#8220;current&#8221; versions of working documents circulating through eight email In-Boxes, my team was paralyzed by revision ambiguity.
